We like to celebrate our birthdays, and pet birthdays are a special occasion too. Have you wanted to have a dog birthday party, but are at a loss on what to do about a cake? If you’re running short on time, or missing a couple of ingredients to bake a cake from scratch, I’ve found something that just might fit the bill!

Will This Work For My Dog Birthday Party?
Puppy Cake is a cake mix safe for dogs. I got the pumpkin flavor, but it is also available in carob, banana, red velvet and peanut butter. Each mix makes 1 6″ round cake, 8 cupcakes or 24 mini cupcakes (I only got 16 mini cupcakes when I made it). If you want to add a little extra flair to the birthday cake, bake it in a bone-shaped silicon pan.
I looked at the list of ingredients for the pumpkin flavor and they were all natural: rice flour, evaporated can juice, pumpkin, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Mixes can either be baked or microwaved.
Is It Hard To Make?
The directions say to add one egg, 3/4 cup water and 1/4 cup vegetable oil. I don’t keep eggs on hand, and since some dogs are allergic to eggs, I decided to try substituting 1/2 banana for the egg and safflower oil for the vegetable oil, the recipe turned out fine.
I made mini-cupcakes, and as I mentioned above, I didn’t get 24 from the mix as the directions stated, I got 16. That was fine, though. The batter didn’t expand much as it baked, so I filled the cake cups 3/4 full and they turned out well.
What About Frosting?
The package includes a packet of yogurt frosting mix, all you have to do is add two tablespoons of water and stir. If your dog doesn’t digest dairy well, you may want to forego the frosting since it contains dehydrated yogurt. My dogs loved the cupcakes, both with and without the frosting.
It’s important to allow the cakes to completely cool before frosting them. Allow them to cool before making the frosting, because the frosting hardens very quickly. Frost the cakes immediately after making the frosting. I did that, but the frosting was still starting to harden by the time I got the entire batch done.
Storage
Storage is easy. Cakes keep 5 days in the refrigerator (in airtight bag), or up to two months in frozen (in airtight bag).
Since any good dog birthday party has ice cream to go along with the cake, Puppy Cake also offers puppy scoops ice cream in vanilla, carob, and peanut butter flavors.
Other Products
Not your pet’s birthday, but you just want to make him a special treat? Just in time for holiday season, Puppy Cakes is offering a “sugar cookie” flavour. In addition, they’re offering a shortbread cookie flavor. Both include a free cookie cutter and are available on their website, puppycakes.com
The ingredients are all human grade, so don’t be hesitant to sample the cakes as you’re offering them to your dog. My dogs absolutely loved them! As with any different food you feed your dog, start with a small amount. Do not feed him 1/2 the cake in one sitting as a product reviewer mentioned.
If you’d like to do something special for a dog birthday, or just because, I would recommend Puppy Cake. My dogs loved their pupcakes! For a complete listing of Puppy Cake products and store locations, check out their site, puppycake.com.
