Bolt, the Yorkie-Poo guest blogger:  I love peanut butter!  Love, love, love it! It smells great! It tastes great! And it is fun to try to lick it off the inside of my mouth.  However, is peanut butter really safe to feed to your dog?  Our friends at pawnation.com have some great things to say about this topic!

Yes, dogs can eat peanut butter, but, as with anything, make sure it is in moderation. It is a great source of protein, but opt for the all-natural kind that does not have all that added sugar and salt. Who needs that? Not even the human kind

Be careful as to how you feed peanut butter to your dog. There have been stories of overly excited dogs who, when fed the yummy glop on a spoon, actually ingested the spoon right along with the peanut butter. Not a good scenario.  Why not put some in one of those Kong toys or similar toys and let your pet entertain himself for hours just trying to lick that stuff out of there!

Also, we suggest you feed your dog the smooth and creamy variety as opposed to the chunky kind…less risk of  choking that way.

Does your dog struggle with taking medicine?  Why not pop his pill into a spoonful of peanut butter and watch it go down with ease!

Just like humans, some dogs do suffer from peanut allergies, so if you notice any kind of adverse reaction from your dog after he enjoys some peanut butter, contact your veterinarian right away!

And, just as some dogs can sniff out cancer and diabetes in humans, they can also sniff out peanut butter and alert allergy-sufferers to possible hidden dangers in the food around them.

Finally, if your dog seems unmotivated to learn new tricks, consider the rewards you are offering for good behavior. Would you want a boring, dry dog biscuit? Not me! Offer peanut butter instead and watch the performance and behavior improve!

Thanks for letting me share your space here today! Every now and again I love to post my thoughts. I hope you enjoyed this, and if so, take heed…I will be back in a “jif!” (No peanut butter pun intended!)
