And the Coolest Dog Is…

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Jessie, taking a break from an unseaonably warm winter’s day: Even though I would much rather be lounging in the embrace of the warm and happy sun today, I am taking a quick break to share some more amazing dog facts with you. After all, we dogs ARE amazing…even if I do say so myself.

Did you know…

**The Greyhound is the fastest dog on earth. That puppy can reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour for short periods of time! Even on a bicycle, you’d be eating his dust!

**The Irish Wolfhound is the largest dog. With wolf in the name, who am I to argue with that declaration?

**The Great Dane is the tallest dog. Remember to look up to these fellows…literally!

**The Chihuahua is the smallest dog….but check out his personality! Tall order!

**The heaviest dog?  The St. Bernard!

**The world’s oldest dog was an Australian cattle-dog named Bluey who died at age 29 years and five months!  Holy Cow…I mean, Holy Dog!

**The world’s coolest dog? Need you ask?

(Thanks to dog-names.org.uk for this great info. Thanks to me for reminding you about that last fact!)

There’s nothing trivial about these dogs!

Hey, hey!  Jessie here with some more exciting dog trivia!  We are closing in on the weekend. Time to kick back, relax, and have fun!  Betcha didn’t know some of this stuff!

Did you know that puppies are born both deaf and blind? It takes 10-14 days for their eyes to open,  and their hearing will develop shortly after that.

Dogs are believed to be descendants of wolves from Southeast Asia at least 14,000 years ago!

The AKC claims that the most popular dog names are Lady and Bear. (But the prettiest dog name is Jessie!)

Did you know that Greyhounds can run as fast as 45 miles per hour?  Let’s put them in the Olympics!

Collies were once considered to be vicious dogs.  Guess none of those dogs were called Lassie!

Border Collies are considered to be the smartest dogs. They love to figure things out and enjoy pleasing their owners. (I do, too. I just don’t go to all that effort!  It comes more naturally to me!)

Almost 4000 dogs served in Vietnam.  Many are hard at work in the Middle East today. Say thank you to those dogs.

$17.4 billion was spent on pet food in 2009.  Wow!  Those are some hungry dogs!

That’s all I have for now!  Thanks for checking us out! Thanks to petyak.com for this fun info!

Pet Trivia that Your Dog Might Not Even Know!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Bo, the intellectual cat: I have been doing some fun research on the internet lately. (Jessie, the reasonable canine, interrupts: Yeah!  When he’s not watching clips on You Tube!)

Bo: Yeah?  Well there sure are a lot of funny videos out there about dogs and their silly antics.  I could easily be entertained for hours.  Nevertheless, I have more pressing things to do.  I prefer to bone up on research and matters of intellectual prowess.  So, when I was surfing the web, I came across some fun trivia facts about pets.  For example, did you know that cats have up to 26 more vertebrae than the human back bone?  This allows for greater flexibility.  Ahh…I feel superior already!

Jessie: Bet you didn’t know that during the 19th century, mummified cats in Egypt were excavated and used as manure!

Bo: Well, I have it on good authority that in the past, Burmese cats were reported to have had their own servants!  In fact, at one point, Burmese cats were so highly valued that it was illegal to sell them!  Cats have class, grace, and dignity…something that you would never understand!

Jessie: Big deal!  Did you know that all dogs are direct descendants of wolves?  Yeah!  You better sleep with one eye open tonight, Fur Ball.

Bo: Before you get all high and mighty, did you know that 25% of a dog’s stool volume is shed intestinal epithelium?  (To the audience: Not exactly sure what that is, but it sounds gross!)

Jessie: Yeah?  Well, some authorities indicate that a dog’s sense of smell is as high as 1 million times greater than humans.  And guess what?  You stink!  (Storms off to the other room!)

Bo, sniffing his arm pits and then turning to audience: I wonder if she actually smells her intestinal epithelium?  Gotta go….just realized Jessie is on my Facebook page!  She could be posting incriminating information!  You all can friend me later!  I have pressing business to tend to! (Running down the hall yelling at Jessie: I am going to de-friend you if you don’t stop that!)

(Thanks to petchalet.com for these fun facts!)

Yeah? Well I can do better than that!

Jessie, adorable dog, friend to many, advisor to all, warden over Bo, that cat that lives in the house:  Did you know that about one million dogs have actually been named as primary beneficiaries in their owners’ wills?  Wonder what I am getting?  Did you also know that about 33% of those who own dogs will admit that they actually talk to their dogs on the phone or leave them a message on voicemail!  (Okay, that is kind of weird.  Usually my agent fields those types of calls!)

Bo:  Well, I can one-up you there, buddy! Cats, not dogs, are the most common pets in America.  It is our 66 million to your 58 million.  You are way out-numbered!

Jessie: So?  Dogs have such large pupils and a wide field of vision that we are really good at following moving targets, er, objects!

Bo:  This is music to my ears:  Cats have more than 100 vocal sounds.  You poor dogs only have ten.

Jessie:  I only need one to tell you where to put it! Moving on, it has been noted that those who own pets live longer, exprerience less stress, and have fewer heart attacks….unless, of course, they live with the likes of Bo.

Bo:  Did you know that the prairie dog is not actually a dog at all?  It is a RODENT!  A distant relative, perhaps, Jessie?

Jessie:  I have to go.  I hear they may be making a monument in my honor somewhere, and I want to be on hand for the unveiling.  There are more monuments in the world made after dogs than cats anyway.

Bo:  Yes…and many dogs have “pee’d” on them?
