Who’s Top Dog In Your City?

As you may know, the American Kennel Club (AKC) publishes an annual list of the nation’s most popular dog breeds. Did you know that they also identify the most popular breeds in many major cities around the country?
Since I’m based in the Kansas City area, I looked us up on the AKC site and found out we’re a ‘big dog breed’ city for the most part. Following is our list by order of popularity for 2011:
- Labrador Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Bulldog
- Boxer
- Golden Retriever
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Chihuahua
- Dachshund/French Bulldog (tied for 8th place)
- Rottweiler
Some interesting breed facts for Kansas City:
- The Golden Retriever bumped the Yorkshire Terrier down one spot last year to become fifth most popular locally.
- Kansas City’s top 10 mostly mirrors the rest of the nation, with the exception of the Chihuahua and French Bulldog (ranking seventh and eighth respectively). Notably absent are the Beagle and Poodle (ranking 24th and 13th respectively).
- Shih Tzus and Miniature Schnauzers fell out of our top 10 and were replaced by the French Bulldog and Rottweiler.
