Most Dangerous Foods For Dogs

Although many of us like to share the occasional bite of food with our canine companion, there are some items that can be very harmful to dogs. The Spring 2014 issue of The Bark listed these as the most dangerous foods for dogs:
- Alcohol: May cause coma, intoxication or death in dogs
- Cooked Bones: May cause stomach lacerations
- Dairy: Although giving your dog a little dairy occasionally isn’t deadly, too much can cause diarrhea
- Mushrooms: Some varieties can cause shock or death
- Caffeine: Can cause vomiting, diarrhea and can be toxic to dog’s heart and nervous system
- Avocado: Contains persin which can cause vomiting and diarrhea
- Walnuts and Macadamias: Can cause muscle and nervous system damage
- Xylitol (a common ingredient in many sugar free candies and gums): May lead to liver damage, hypertension or even death in dogs
- Raisins and Grapes: Causes kidney failure
- Onions and Garlic (large amount): May cause blood cell damage or anemia
- Fatty Foods: Does your dog like to share fries with you when you visit a fast food restaurant? Too much fatty food can lead to pancreatitis in dogs
- Chocolate: Toxic to heart and nervous system and can lead to death in dogs
If you think your dog may have eaten an item on this list, contact your vet immediately or call the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at (888) 426-4435, or the National Pet Poison Hotline at (800) 213-6680.
