Here is an infographic I found on dailyinfographics.com that shows many aspects of barking and what it means.  There is one segment of the infographic showing debarking (surgically altering the dog so it cannot bark), shock collars and drugs as ways to stop barking.  Although these methods are used by some dog owners, none are practices I endorse in any way.
