Eating Healthy for Us and Our Pets

I was reading the November 2010 issue of Dog Fancy yesterday and came across a good article in the Natural Dog section about healthy eating for us and our pets.  The article includes recipes using green beans, spinach and sweet potatoes.  There are two recipes for each vegetable; prepared using basic ingredients for dogs, then adding a few more ingredients to make it for people.

The sweet potato recipe for dogs is quite easy and only includes three ingredients:  2 sweet potatoes, 2T extra virgin olive oil and 1t cumin.  Slice the potatoes lengthwise, brush with oil and sprinkle with cumin.  Bake at 375 until slightly brown and tender, turning often to prevent burning.  Allow them to cool, then add a couple to your pet’s daily feedings.

To customize for you, make a dipping sauce using 2t wildflower honey and 3T spicy of Dijon mustard.  The potatoes can be prepared as stated above, if you like them a little crisper, place under the broiler for a few minutes.

For recipes using fresh green beans and another using spinach, check out the Fall 2010 Natural Dog magazine teamed with the November 2010 Dog Fancy.

My dog Jessie and I plan to try out the sweet potato recipes in the next couple of days.  Try them out and let us know what you and your pet think…..bon appetit!
