Has Your Dog Packed Yet for Vacation?

Many of us are heading to various destinations for vacation, our pets in some cases accompanying us.  As we all know, there are certain essentials we always make sure are in our bags when we’re leaving town. Our pets have “must-haves” they need for vacation too.  Here are some items your dog should have in her bag:

  • Identification.   Make sure your dog is wearing ID in the event you get separated during your trip. Dogs like to explore new territory and they could wander away before you realize it.
  • Towels.  When out and about it’s not unusual for rains to pop up, and your dog could end up with muddy paws.  It’s a good idea to have a few towels on hand to help clean your dog if the need arises.
  • Food.  It’s not a good idea to experiment with new foods for your dog while on vacation.  Pack enough of your pet’s normal food to last for the entire vacation to minimize the possibility of digestive upset.
  • Something familiar from home.  It’s comforting to your dog to have something familiar, like a favorite toy or bed, for them when traveling.  It can be a little stressful having a change in schedule and scenery, so having something familiar will keep your dog calm.

Have you and your dog packed yet?

Road trip with pet in tow!

Jessie, the world-traveler (or so she thinks!): If you are considering taking your lovable pet on a summer vacation in the car, be sure to take a few moments to get your car ready.  You can’t just put the cat or the dog in the car and take off down the road!  Be sure to create a place in the car where your pet can not only ride safely but have an opportunity to look out the window.  Your pet should be close enough that you can reach out and pet him or her occasionally.  However, it is not advisable to travel with your pet sitting on your lap!

Make sure your pet has access to its water and perhaps to a comfy towel or small bed so that he or she feels at home.  Be sure to use a pet restraint device to keep them safe.  You need a seat belt!  So does your pet!

If you are traveling with your cat, find a place for the kitty litter.  Putting it behind the front seat is a great spot, but be sure to place a piece of plastic underneath it first, or just lay it on top of an empty trash bag.

For the most part, your pet will probably sleep for most of the trip, unless he or she is like Bo (the craziest cat ever!) here and enjoys rocking out to some groovy tunes. (Insert eye roll here on Jessie’s part!).

You will want to stop every two to three hours to let your dog take care of its business and stretch its legs.

Check back later this week for more exciting tips on traveling with your pets!  I prefer to go First Class, so my standards are somewhat higher than most!

Are you ready for a road trip?

Bo, here, the worldly cat: Hey! I think I am due for a new passport.  Mine is rather dog-eared (no pun intended) and close to expiration.  Now that summer is in full swing, it is time to think about hitting the road for some grand adventures in travel! I was thinking maybe the South of France or..

Jessie, the fun-loving dog: How about DisneyWorld?  That would be awesome!  I could meet Mickey and Minnie and Daisy and Donald and..

Bo, rolling his eyes: Well, little lady, before we make any plans to go anywhere, we have to make sure our human knows what to pack for us.  We are going to focus our posts this month on traveling and vacationing with pets.  If you thought you had to be prepared to take KIDS on vacation, wait until you get a whiff of what you need to do to take us along for the ride….but I promise you, it will be worth the effort!

Before you head out the door, be sure to prepare your pet for the journey. Make sure he is healthy and has all of his shots up to date.  Some hotels now require proof of this.  Also be sure to give your pet any flea and tick medication as well as his heartworm preventative.

When packing your pet supplies, pack them all into one bag for easy retrieval. Some of the items you should pack include:

A leash and a collar

A pet name tag with your contact information on it

Bottled water and a water dish

A supply of pet food and a dish

Don’t forget any treats!

A pet brush, some pet shampoo, a couple of toys, and something comfy for him to sleep on

Be sure to include any necessary medications for your pet, as well as a pair of tweezers to remove burrs, eye cleaning drops, and ear powder.

Be sure to keep your pet safe in the car by using a pet restraint device, which is much like your seat belt!  It is important to keep your precious cargo safe!

Stay tuned for how to prepare us for the open road!  I just hope Jessie does not succumb to car sickness!  Ewwww……
