Fun Facts About Dogs…Betcha Didn’t Know!

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Jessie, the wise and intellectual dog: Finally!  Another opportunity to showcase my intelligent thoughts, ideas, and understandings….something that mangy cat around here knows nothing about!  If you are a dog lover, then these fun facts about dogs are bound to entertain, enlighten, and inspire you!  Read on…

**A dog’s shoulder blades are not attached to the rest of its skeleton, providing for greater flexibility when running.

**The ancient Egyptians revered their dogs.  Whenever a pet dog passed away, the owner would shave off his eyebrows, smear mud in his hair, and cry aloud for days.

**Plato once pontificated that “a dog has the soul of a philosopher.”

**It costs about $10,000.00 to train a federally-certified search and rescue dog.  (And you thought college was expensive!)

**The first sense that dogs develop is that of touch.  The entire body, even the paws, is covered with touch-sensitive nerve endings.

**The nose prints of dogs are just as unique as the fingerprints of humans and can be used for identification purposes.

**The average dog can run about 19 mph.  Good luck if he escapes from your grip and you are in dress shoes!

**Dogs can understand about 150-200 words, including hand signals and hand movements that possess the same meaning as the words.

**A person standing still 300 yards away is almost invisible to a dog, but a dog can readily recognize its owner standing a mile away if the owner is waving his arms.

**Different smells in a dog’s urine can tell other dogs whether the dog leaving the “message” is a male or a female, happy or upset, young or old, sick or healthy.

**The most intelligent dogs are supposedly the Border Collie and the Poodle.  Enough said.  Gotta go!

Pet Trivia that Your Dog Might Not Even Know!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Bo, the intellectual cat: I have been doing some fun research on the internet lately. (Jessie, the reasonable canine, interrupts: Yeah!  When he’s not watching clips on You Tube!)

Bo: Yeah?  Well there sure are a lot of funny videos out there about dogs and their silly antics.  I could easily be entertained for hours.  Nevertheless, I have more pressing things to do.  I prefer to bone up on research and matters of intellectual prowess.  So, when I was surfing the web, I came across some fun trivia facts about pets.  For example, did you know that cats have up to 26 more vertebrae than the human back bone?  This allows for greater flexibility.  Ahh…I feel superior already!

Jessie: Bet you didn’t know that during the 19th century, mummified cats in Egypt were excavated and used as manure!

Bo: Well, I have it on good authority that in the past, Burmese cats were reported to have had their own servants!  In fact, at one point, Burmese cats were so highly valued that it was illegal to sell them!  Cats have class, grace, and dignity…something that you would never understand!

Jessie: Big deal!  Did you know that all dogs are direct descendants of wolves?  Yeah!  You better sleep with one eye open tonight, Fur Ball.

Bo: Before you get all high and mighty, did you know that 25% of a dog’s stool volume is shed intestinal epithelium?  (To the audience: Not exactly sure what that is, but it sounds gross!)

Jessie: Yeah?  Well, some authorities indicate that a dog’s sense of smell is as high as 1 million times greater than humans.  And guess what?  You stink!  (Storms off to the other room!)

Bo, sniffing his arm pits and then turning to audience: I wonder if she actually smells her intestinal epithelium?  Gotta go….just realized Jessie is on my Facebook page!  She could be posting incriminating information!  You all can friend me later!  I have pressing business to tend to! (Running down the hall yelling at Jessie: I am going to de-friend you if you don’t stop that!)

(Thanks to petchalet.com for these fun facts!)

Yeah? Well I can do better than that!

Jessie, adorable dog, friend to many, advisor to all, warden over Bo, that cat that lives in the house:  Did you know that about one million dogs have actually been named as primary beneficiaries in their owners’ wills?  Wonder what I am getting?  Did you also know that about 33% of those who own dogs will admit that they actually talk to their dogs on the phone or leave them a message on voicemail!  (Okay, that is kind of weird.  Usually my agent fields those types of calls!)

Bo:  Well, I can one-up you there, buddy! Cats, not dogs, are the most common pets in America.  It is our 66 million to your 58 million.  You are way out-numbered!

Jessie: So?  Dogs have such large pupils and a wide field of vision that we are really good at following moving targets, er, objects!

Bo:  This is music to my ears:  Cats have more than 100 vocal sounds.  You poor dogs only have ten.

Jessie:  I only need one to tell you where to put it! Moving on, it has been noted that those who own pets live longer, exprerience less stress, and have fewer heart attacks….unless, of course, they live with the likes of Bo.

Bo:  Did you know that the prairie dog is not actually a dog at all?  It is a RODENT!  A distant relative, perhaps, Jessie?

Jessie:  I have to go.  I hear they may be making a monument in my honor somewhere, and I want to be on hand for the unveiling.  There are more monuments in the world made after dogs than cats anyway.

Bo:  Yes…and many dogs have “pee’d” on them?
