Getting Great Pictures of Your Pet

Marty, kicking backI love taking pictures of my pets, Jessie and Marty, as well as capturing images of clients when I’m with them.  If you’re wanting some great pictures of your pet, but have trouble getting them to “sit pretty”, here are some other picture ideas:

  • The weather is pretty right now, so many dogs are really wanting time outside.  Have your camera handy and snap a picture of your dog as he’s sitting in the sun, enjoying the warmth of it.
  • If your pet enjoys playing with a special toy indoors, capture a picture of him actively playing with it.
  • Does your pet enjoy treats?  Get a picture of her as she’s enjoying snack.
  • Dogs and cats often like to lay on their backs, all stretched out, snap a picture of that, it’ll make you laugh when you look at it later.
  • If you have young children, take a picture of your cat or dog with your child when they don’t know you’re watching.

These aren’t the standard “pretty” poses, but they’ll definitely bring back fond memories when you look at them years from now.  I took the picture of Marty, shown above, one afternoon a while ago.

Do you have a favorite candid picture of your pet?  Please share……..

Texting and Driving – Big No-No; Spot in Your Lap While Driving? Just as Dangerous?

Dog drivingParty Marty, the cool cat supposedly smarter than the dog in the house: Hey! I came across an interesting article online this week at theweek.com. We all know how dangerous driving and texting can be, but what about those drivers who let their dogs sit on their laps when they drive? That has to be a bit precarious, don’t you think?

According to the source, more than one in five drivers who bring their dogs along for the ride let them climb onto their laps while they drive. While texting has been heralded as the new drunk driving, cruising along with Spot on your lap can be just as dangerous. In fact, two states are considering making it illegal to do so – Rhode Island and Tennessee.

In a 2010 survey conducted by AAA, the results indicated that 21% of drivers who had their dogs in the car with them allowed those dogs on their laps while driving. Seven percent claimed they even fed or gave their dogs water while driving; and five percent confessed to actually playing with their dog while navigating the car. Seriously? Thirty-one percent admitted that having the dogs on their laps did create a distraction. Really?

Did you know that if you have a 10-pound dog unrestrained traveling with you at 50 mph, he can fly forward with 500 pounds of pressure in a crash, and an 80-pound beast going 30 mph in the car can create 2,400 pounds of pressure upon impact? That sounds pretty deadly to me.

While no state prohibits pets in the car, Tennessee and Rhode Island seem to be aggressively pursuing action that would ban an animal from being in one’s life while he or she is operating the vehicle. While fines in Rhode Island will be anywhere from $85.00 to $125.00, in Tennessee, driving with a dog in one’s lap or “between the driver and the driver’s door,” could result in a Class C misdemeanor, along with a $50.00 fine and up to 30 days in jail.

So, where do you think Spot should ride now when in the car? I’m thinking back seat with a restraining device. Safer for all! Don’t worry…we cats are highly independent creatures…we will find our own way to any destination…usually the warm spot near the window!

Keeping the Peace In a Multiple Cat Household

Having multiple cats can be fun but it also has its challenges.  Following are ten tips to maintain order and keep all the feline residents purring:

  1. If you have one cat currently and are now adding another, choosing a new cat of the opposite sex can reduce fighting among them.
  2. If your current cat is older, rather than adopting one kitten think about adopting two so they can keep each other busy.
  3. Never leave a new cat alone with the resident cat(s) until you are certain they won’t fight.
  4. Never give treats to one cat and not another.
  5. Window perches create space and allow your cats to sun themselves and give some personal space.
  6. Grooming your cats regularly can help reduce their stress and yours.
  7. Do not allow play between cats to become aggressive.
  8. If fighting occurs between cats, do not attempt to separate them by hand.  Distract them by making a loud noise and put them in separate locations.
  9. Learn to understand feline body language.
  10. Make sure each cat’s needs are met and that each cat is treated as an individual member of the family.

Enjoy your feline family members and have a purr-fect day!

Chip Bags Can Be Deadly

BlueI just finished reading a story on the PETA.org site of a woman whose dog suffocated because of a mylar potato chip bag.

It seems Blue was quite a mischievous fellow, escaping when he got the chance or getting into the trash when his people were gone.  One day, while his mom was at the store, Blue decided to raid the garbage can and found a real treasure, an empty potato chip bag with some crumbs left inside.

He stuck his head into the bag all the way to get the crumbs and the bag got stuck on his head.  In his panic to get air, the mylar bag became a suction and he was unable to get it off.  He eventually lost consciousness and suffocated by the time his mom got home.

The danger of mylar chip bags to pets and children is not widely known.  Blue’s family is hoping to bring focus to this issue in the hopes chip companies will begin putting warnings on the bags and eventually change the bag materials.

In the meantime, if you have empty chip bags that are made of mylar, please cut them into pieces before putting them in the trash.  Blue’s family has established a Facebook page to enlighten people on the danger of mylar bags.  Check out their page at https://www.facebook.com/PreventPetSuffocation

Could YOU Be Making Your Dog Bark????

Party Marty, the amazing and phenomenal cat, here once again, dishing out the advice and dispensing the wisdom as only I know how! Boy! Do I hate dog barking! It makes my ears bleed! Does your dog bark excessively?  Did you know that your dog’s barking may be attributed to YOUR behavior and mental state of mind? I’m just saying….

According to cesarsway.com, dogs bark for many reasons, but I found it interesting to discover that sometimes dogs bark in response to its owner’s negative energy. Yep! If you are frustrated over something, your dog will pick up on that sensitivity and let out that pent-up frustration by barking.

What to do? Quit that internal barking of your own and simmer down! I know…easier said than done, but if your dog barks and you can’t figure out why…no one at the door, no one outside the window, already went outside to conduct its business…that sort of thing…then look inward to see if he is barking at YOU! Hey! It could happen!

By the way, cats don’t bark! I’m just saying…
