5 Signs of Tooth Resorption In Cats

Monday, February 6th, 2012

It’s the #1 Cause of Tooth Loss In Cats, & 50-75% of Cats Suffer From This Dental Problem

We’re all familiar with tooth decay, when bacteria destroy the tooth’s enamel but tooth resorption is degenerative, starting at the gum line and eventually destroying the tooth’s structure.  Here are some symptoms of tooth resorption:

  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Head shaking or tilting of head
  • Decreased grooming
  • Not wanting to be touched around head

If your cat is exhibiting these symptoms, make an appointment with his vet from a check-up.

It’s All About The Tone

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Earlier today, I attended a lunch presentation entitled “It’s Not Just What You Say, It’s HOW You Say It”. The presenter, Barb Teicher of etc., an executive coaching company based in the KC area, spoke about all the aspects of communication, other than our words, that determine how effectively we communicate with others.

Although the presentation was about communication between humans, some aspects hold true when communicating with our pets. The jury is still out on just how many words our pets really understand, but it is very easy to tell how pets react to our tone of voice.

When we speak in a harsh tone to pets, they often will shrink away from us. The same words said in a kinder tone produce a much more positive reaction.

Think before you speak, you’ll like the results!

Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

MartyToday is Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day, and I have to admit my guy Marty presented me with some interesting ones.  Here’s his list:

  • Why don’t all humans adore cats and have at least one living with them?
  • Why don’t humans have tails?
  • Why do humans get in boxes with water to clean themselves?  Why don’t they just lick themselves like we felines do?
  • Why do dogs go outside when they have to potty?  Why don’t they use a litterbox like we do?
  • When dogs go outside, why do they wear those long string things that their human holds?
  • Why are there so many dogs around, and why do they wear clothes?  Do they know how silly they look?
  • Why can’t I have constant access to my food?

So, what are the questions your cat had for you?

No Wonder Cats are so Cool!

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Kooter the CatThe Spirit of Bo, returning to share some amazing cat trivia to let you know why cats are known to be cool: Yes, it has been just over a year since I left this earthly plane, but I still remain as an angel to those I left behind. Besides, do you really think I’d let Party Marty take over this blog entirely? Not in my nine life times!

As I was doing some research on the internet, I came across some fun cat trivia. It’s always interesting to read cool things about cats, as we are amazing creatures!

From cat-world.com, I discovered the following:

**Cats have been in existence longer than humans. Yeah…we rock it! We got here first!

**Cats perspire through their paws.  Did you really think we’d sport a sweaty look around our gorgeous faces?

**Urine from cats will glow under a black light. We’re so cool, even our bodily waste glows!

**A cat’s gestation is between 61-70 days.  Don’t know why you humans take nine months!

**Cats can jump five times their height! And you thought the dog was the one counter-surfing!

**The normal body temperature of cats is 102 degrees F. See? We’re hot stuff!

**Cats don’t kill their prey with their claws.  They hold their prey with their claws and let their teeth do the work!

**Domestic cats can walk while keeping their tail vertical. Yeah…and some of you can’t even walk and chew gum at the same time!

Now you have a few reasons why we claim to be cool! Check you later! I’m always around, if only in spirit!

Winter Skin Care for Pets

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Dog Winter wreaks havoc on our hair and skin, causing dryness and the dreaded static electricity. We aren’t alone in needing to take special care of our hair and skin in winter, our pets have special needs too.

Here are some tips to help pets look and feel their best during winter:

  • The air inside can become quite dry, depleting moisture from pet’s skin and hair, causing dander to increase. To improve your pets skin and coat, brush them regularly and vigorously.
  • Give your pet fatty acid supplements to help skin and coat.
  • When grooming your dog in the winter, be sure not to cut your dog’s coat too short.  The longer coat provides extra warmth.
  • If your dog engages in a lot of outdoor activities in winter, be sure to increase his food supply to help keep his coat thick and healthy.
  • When bathing your dog in winter, be sure to dry him thoroughly before heading out for a walk.

Has Your Pet (or You!) Made Your New Year’s Resolutions Yet?

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Happy New YearParty Marty here, the cool cat who is so perfect, he has no need to resolve to do anything differently in 2012.  If, however, you are of the canine species or of the human species, then perhaps a little house cleaning is in order! HA!

Here are a few suggestions for you and your pets to make this year. Okay, so perhaps some cats do need to resolve to do things differently, but as for me, well, I’ll continue to roll as I always have. However, I will try to pester Jessie a bit less. (Dang it…I really shouldn’t publicly commit to that, should I?)

**Resolve to incorporate one stimulating game every day into your pet’s routine.  Mix it up a bit!  Engage him in play!  Give him something to which he can look forward!

**Put health first on your list.  Take daily walks with your dog, weather permitting.  It will help both of you to keep your weight in check and will provide for appreciable bonding time.

**Feel free to indulge your pet in an extra-special pampering day at the doggie spa one or two times in the coming year. You’ll both feel great afterwards!

**Take your dog to the local dog park frequently.

**Teach your pet a new trick.

**Stay up to date on your pet’s vaccinations and regular exams at the veterinarian’s office.

**Tell your pet you love him or her every day.

This is a great start! Oh, yeah!  I do resolve to continue to be the one cool cat that I am!  That should be easy and painless!

Enjoy the rest of 2011!

Traveling this holiday without your pet? Here are some benefits to using a pet sitting service!

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Jessie, the pampered pooch who prefers all of the comforts of home:  If your holiday plans this year involve traveling but don’t involve taking your pet, then consider the amazing benefits of using a pet sitting service as opposed to simply boarding your dog somewhere or entrusting your lovable, but sometimes forgetful, Aunt Gladys to stop by daily to check in on your dog or cat.

First of all, if you have a licensed and bonded pet sitter come to your home, your pet will be taken care of in familiar surroundings and this will greatly reduce his stress. After all, they are stressed enough because of your absence.

When cared for in his own home, your pet can readily stick to his diet and daily routine. No interruptions.

There’s no need to traumatize your pet by loading him up in the car and taking him somplace, only to drop him off and say, “Goodbye!” What if you never return to get us????  Oh, the drama!

Keep us at home and reduce our exposure to illness.  What pet owner wants a sick dog upon coming home from a vacation?

With a pet sitter, you have a reliable person to tend to your dog in accordance with your instructions. There are no worries that your somewhat irresponsbile next door neighbor or nephew will forget to stop by at the pre-determined times. Consistency will be maintained with a responsible pet sitter.

So, if you live in the Kansas City area, consider the trusted folks at Joy of Living Pet Sitting Services. Your pets will love you for it! (And, no, I have not been paid to say this, unless, of course, you count that doggie treat earlier in the day! Yum!)

*Thanks to petsit.com for some of this information! Thanks to me to making you aware of in-home pet sitting services and the amazing benefits!
